The Jackson* family came to the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation after living in their Bayview home for 12 years. Their two small children had known their rented house as “home” for their entire lives. As a writer and teacher, Mr. and Ms. Jackson were lucky to have an apartment under rent control – until their landlord began harassing them. Their landlord had already forced out the Jacksons’ neighbors to bypass rent control and triple his profits. Now, the landlord had turned his attention to the Jacksons, and had been threatening to kick their family out. Without a rent-controlled apartment, the Jackson family had no option but to leave San Francisco and the Bayview neighborhood that they love. Desperate, the Jackson family came to San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC) seeking help. They took our workshops, attended individual financial counseling, and were referred to a partner organization for legal help. Through our layered services, they were eventually able to purchase an affordable condominium that SFHDC had developed. “I don’t know what we would have done without you,” Mr. Jackson told us, “You saved this family!” *Name changed for privacy.
